ONE COURSE ULTIMATE MURDER MYSTERY DINNER
Oh thank goodness – a convenient party game you can fall back on when dinner conversation dries up.
In the same way as Dungeon World simulates a game of D&D whilst not using the mechanics – it appears to be a game of D&D to the outside observer – this game attempts to simulate a Murder Mystery. Complete with hidden roles (Detective! Killer! Accomplice! Red Herring! Others Not Listed Here!), stock characters (Big time oil man! Obviously murderous widow! Plucky photojournalist! And more!), and prompts to help improvise some sort of narrative.
It’s got all the good bits of murder mysteries and hidden role games: secret agendas, gossip, revelations, pretending to be shocked at the revelations while secretly being smug that you figured it out ages ago, and none of the boring bits (like figuring out the optimum tactic, which works 9 games out of 10, we’re looking at you Werewolf).
Crucially, this game plays out in about half an hour, which we believe to be the duration of a polite and civilised single course dinner. If it doesn’t work quite the way you wanted, you can play something else over dessert.
