We recommend that you consider using safety tools when you play games that tackle challenging themes, especially with groups or players you don’t know well.
This is a non-exhaustive list of safety tools that RR&D staff use at our tables. If there’s something missing from this list you think we should include, drop us a line at admin@rrdgames.com to say so.
- C.A.T.S. by Patrick O’Leary: a simple way to pitch your game to your players and check in on tricky themes.
- Lines and Veils, introduced by Ron Edwards: a way to set out topics the group is comfortable or uncomfortable exploring. There are many lists of Lines and Veils available online; we often use the Roll20 version.
- The Script Change Toolbox, by Beau Jรกgr Sheldon: a full-featured toolkit which is worth reading in full to see what elements might be useful to you and your group.
- The TTRPG Safety Toolkit, by Kienna Shaw & Lauren Bryant-Monk: a living resource offering quick-setup and more detailed options for before,
- The X Card, by John Stavropoulos: a simple and non-verbal “stop and rewind” tool.
