Recover
A solo game about getting better.
A while back, Grant wrote FETCH, a solo journaling game about learning you are not a real person, and about selling your facsimile of life dearly, and leaving a bombsite of misery in your wake. (If you click on the link, please do check the safety guidelines before you read anything else: FETCH is a dark place.)
RECOVER is the sequel. It’s a solo game which expressly bans the player from writing anything down. It has, what, seven prompts? There’s no fun little RSI mechanics, even. But it’s about getting better. It’s about finding your place in the world and in your head. And it’s about making yourself, because you can, and you can be who you need to be.
Safety Guidelines
Recover hits on some sensitive topics you should be aware of before deciding whether to play:
CONTENT WARNINGS: depression, suicidality (past), body horror.
De-roling (shaking off the character you portrayed and returning to yourself) and managing bleed (addressing and mitigating the characters’ thoughts and feelings’ impact on the player) are both important when playing Recover. For tools to help with this, take a look at Black Armadaโs safety guideย orย Beau Jรกgr Sheldonโs Script Change toolbox.
