In 2016, Grant Howitt decided – flippantly – to write a one-page roleplaying game every month and release it for free online. Little did he know that the barely-intelligible pen-and-ink scratches he turned out would go on to define his career, and the shape of roleplaying games, for years to come.

Played by thousands of people all over the world, Grant’s one-page games run the gamut from strange to silly, daft to deadly serious, and powerfully original to potentially copyright-infringing. This volume is a special collection of ten one-page games aimed at younger readers, complete with SECRET BACK PAGE material for every game that’s never been released online. (If there were any swears or grown-up concepts in the game, we’ve swapped them out for more family-friendly content.)

Each game has been written, illustrated (poorly) and laid out entirely by Grant, unless someone else helped him, in which case it says so.

About the author: Grant Howitt is the most prolific and celebrated creator of one-page roleplaying games in the business. He has written more than 75 one-page games so far (as well as multiple full-length books with themes and political statements) and shows no sign of slowing down.

One page games?

HERE’S THE DEAL: I write one tabletop or live roleplaying game a month. It will be no bigger than one side of A4 paper (that’s one side of letter paper, for you American types) and I will do all the art, layout and design myself in pen.

My games are, in general: short, punchy, well-written and exciting. Over the last six years of writing I’ve become more serious and less silly, so expect to see a mix of tones ranging from introspective and heart-breaking to daft and explosive. I’ll always strive to innovate and offer something original or surprising in each game.
