War, heroics and ennui in the dying days of a science-fantasy MMO.
True Lives of the Cosmic Champions is a game about an endless war against monsters from beyond the solar system, and the immortal champions who cannot lose against this threat, but also cannot win. Can you maintain the drive to keep going and keep fighting? Can your bonds with the other Champions enable you to pull through? Or will your apathy and ennui become overwhelming?
To play this game, you’ll need a set of dice from d4 up to d12. Multiple d6s will be helpful. You can play it solo, or with others; it’s designed to work best with up to 4 players, but you can go bigger if you want.
Inspirations:
This game is based on the strangely melancholy experience I’ve had playing Destiny, and late-endgame MMO social dynamics in general: how the raids become an excuse for a social group to hang out, how the constant drip of updates requires an endless escalation of threats that nonetheless never actually change much, and how the only thing that can truly kill an MMO character is boredom.
For all that, I have a genuine fondness for this universe, and I hope this comes through as you play!
